What is a UK ETA?
An Electronic Travel Authorisation (ETA) is a digital travel permission that allows eligible travellers to travel to the United Kingdom for purposes such as tourism, visiting family and friends, certain business activities or short-term study, generally for stays of up to six months.
An ETA is not a visa and does not guarantee entry to the UK. Travellers must still meet the applicable immigration and entry requirements.
Do I need an ETA to travel to the UK?
Since 25 February 2026, the UK has enforced its ETA requirement for eligible visitors who do not need a visa before travelling.
Most visitors from visa-exempt countries must obtain an approved ETA before travelling to the UK. However, the requirement does not apply to everyone, and exemptions depend on nationality, immigration status and individual circumstances.
You generally do not need an ETA if you:
Hold a valid British or Irish passport.
Already have a UK visa.
Have permission to live, work or study in the UK, including settled or pre-settled status.
Hold certain British nationality documents that qualify for an exemption.
Qualify for another applicable exemption under UK immigration rules.
Travellers with dual British or Irish citizenship should check the official guidance on which documents they must present when travelling.
To check whether you need an ETA or a visa, visit the UK Government's official visa and ETA checker.
Do I need an ETA if I am travelling with my family or a group?
Yes, if the ETA requirement applies to you. Each eligible traveller must have their own ETA, including babies and children.
You can submit applications on behalf of other family members, but each person must have an individual authorisation before travelling.
How do I apply for a UK ETA?
You can apply through the official UK ETA mobile app or online using the UK Government website.
When applying, you will generally need to provide your passport details, a photograph or facial image, an email address and payment of the application fee.
Apply well in advance of your journey. Although many applications receive a decision quickly, some may take longer. The UK Government recommends allowing up to three working days for a decision.
For the application process and the latest fee, visit the official UK Government ETA application page.
What happens if I travel without a required ETA?
If you need an ETA but do not have a valid one, your carrier may refuse to let you board your flight, train or ferry.
Travellers should check their documentation before departure to avoid disruption, additional costs or the need to rearrange their journey.
An ETA does not guarantee entry to the UK. The final decision on permission to enter remains subject to the applicable UK immigration rules.
